Internship Spotlight: Michael Seligman (EY)

Michael Seligman (2018) is an Accounting Major who interned with EY. He kindly shared his experience with us.

What department or area did you work with most often?
“I was a member of the Northeast Assurance Team.  This was my primary area of focus during my internship with EY.  I worked on clients from various industries including medical, logistics, and manufacturing.”

What was the most positive experience you had at the internship?
“The ability to network within the firm was something I really enjoyed.  Even as just an intern at such a large firm, networking with partners and other employees was easily accessible.”

What was the greatest learning experience?
“In any occupation, the work performed on a daily basis cannot be duplicated.  The best experience I had at EY was performing actual client work on an engagement team with other EY Professionals.  The day to day interactions with not only other EY Professionals, but with controllers and finance directors of the client organizations, were exceptional learning experiences.

Did you learn more about professionalism in the workplace? If so, what part of professionalism stands out?
“Becoming acclimated to the professional setting and to what is expected in the workplace is a new experience for any intern.  Making the jump from college to the workplace is a tricky transition.  Throughout my internship, I learned that the most important part of professionalism was my attitude.  By maintaining an attentive and positive attitude, the best impression was made on my team.”

What is the biggest take away from your experience?
“I left my internship at EY feeling more than confident I could complete any task that was required of me.  That is a testament to the preparation and guidance EY provides.  The resources are endless and should be utilized to the fullest extent.”

What skill(s) do you think you enhanced from this internship?
“The biggest improvement I experienced came through the use of Microsoft Excel.  Excel was used extensively throughout the internship.  I started with a foundation in Excel I had developed through my time at TCNJ, and finished the internship feeling very confident using various shortcuts and other functions I had previously not been exposed to.  My computer skills as a whole definitely improved during my time at EY.”
