Campus Recruiting Policies
The TCNJ Career Center is a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and adheres to and promotes its Principles for Professional Practice. We reserve the right to refuse service to any company or organization whose business we believe is not suitable for our students and alumni, nor consistent with the mission of The College of New Jersey.
We do not partner with or promote the following:
- Commission-Only Employers: These include organizations that do not pay a base salary to their employees.
- Multilevel Employers (also known as “Pyramid Employers”): These include organizations that depend on employees recruiting others to sell products and services on a commission basis.
- Upfront Product Purchase or Fee Employers: These include organizations that require employees to invest their resources in the purchase of supplies, products or services to carry out their business. Or, positions requiring a fee for training/participation in a work experience or for any other reason.
- Home based opportunities, such as a home based business, in home care, or home canvassing positions.
- International positions.
Third-Party Recruiters (including executive search firms, employment agencies, and contract recruiters) will be allowed to post jobs on Handshake if they adhere to the below policies:
- The name of the recruiter agency and client/employer must be clearly stated in the job title or posting description.
- Or the job posting is an internal position within the recruiter agency.
On Campus Interview Policies
Student Eligibility Policy
TCNJ undergraduates and graduate students are eligible to participate in the Campus Recruiting Program. Alumni do have access to the Handshake system. Employers are expected to maintain the confidentiality of student information, regardless of the source (including personal knowledge, written records/reports, social networking websites and computer databases).
Students must complete an On Campus Interview Policy Survey in Handshake prior to applying to Campus Recruiting Program.
Student No Show Policy
We value our partnership with students and employers. This is why if selected for an on-campus interview, students are expected to interview.
If a student doesn’t show up for their interview, first their Handshake account will be blocked then they will receive an email to meet with a Career Center staff member. After the meeting students are able to regain access to Handshake.
Campus Closure Policy
In the event that The College of New Jersey is closed on the day of a recruitment event, communication will be sent via email as soon as a closure is announced. Announcements are also posted on The College of New Jersey website.
It is recommended that a new date be selected on the same day of the week to match students’ class schedule. If held on a different day of the week, the interview schedule is re-opened for students to select a new time. Another consideration is to offer phone/video interviews.
Offer Extension Policies
Job/Internship Offer Extension Policy
In accordance with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) guidelines, our goal is to encourage practices that create a transparent and equitable process for students and employers. Effective communication is essential to align with NACE Principles for Ethical Professional Practice, which seeks to “maintain a recruitment process that is fair and equitable and that supports informed and responsible decision-making by candidates.” The following guidelines are intended to provide students and employers a fair and transparent framework for managing the offer process.
As a guide, once candidates have received written offers from employers, a minimum of two weeks should be allowed for students to make informed decisions.
The written offer should clearly state all appropriate terms and conditions, including, but not limited to, position title/description, location, start date, end date (if applicable) and compensation (salary, bonuses, benefits, etc.).
All bonuses or other incentives are to remain in full effect for the entire duration of the offer period.
Employers should be flexible in granting offer extensions on a case-by-case basis if the circumstances warrant it.
The Career Center encourages students to contact employers directly if they have any questions or concerns about their offers, including needing more time to make their decisions. They are also encouraged to make decisions on employment offers within a reasonable time frame and to be sensitive to employer needs.
We recognize that employers have certain constraints in the flexibility they have to accommodate student needs. However, exploding offers, those made with unnecessary pressure and insufficient time to respond, are strictly prohibited. Students should not be pressured to accept offers “on the spot” or “early,” whether this is based upon a shorter timeframe for consideration overall and/or due to any special diminishing incentives attached, e.g., tiered or expiring bonuses, reduced options for location preferences, etc. The Career Center expects all employers to refrain from such practices when recruiting TCNJ students.
Offer Renege Policy
We value our partnership with students and employers. If a student has already accepted an offer, we ask that they let the Career Center know as soon as possible and withdraw any outstanding applications in Handshake.
Reneging on an offer is a serious violation of the recruitment policy, and is never permitted or condoned by the TCNJ Career Center. Anyone who accepts offers from organizations only to later decline those offers have their Handshake account blocked and are required to meet with a Career Center staff member. Future recruiting privileges will be determined after this meeting.
It is strongly recommended that employers notify TCNJ Career Center if an individual reneges.
Offer Extension Policies Specific to Accounting Firms
Students who interview in the fall semester with no prior contact for Externship, Leadership, & Summer Internship opportunities generally receive an offer through late October/early November. Employers should allow a minimum of two weeks from the date of the written offer with the potential of an extension until December 1st for students to accept or decline.
Employers, who are considering a student for a Winter Internship (tax season), can provide an offer to this candidate at any time and expect a response by October 31st, or a minimum of two weeks from the date of the written offer. Extensions may be granted case by case. This change in deadline is due to a student’s course selection for the following semester, as students select classes the first week of November.
We ask that firms to allow students to take Thursdays off so they can to be on campus to take required accounting courses during the spring semester. The tentative schedule for these courses (pending on finalized decision) is:
Cost Accounting: Thursday 9:30am- 12:20pm
Intermediate ACC: Thursday 3:30pm-6:20pm
Spring & Summer Offers
For all offers extended after the conclusion of previous employment during the Spring/Summer terms (Externship, Leadership, Winter or Summer Internship), employers should allow a minimum of two weeks from the date of the written offer with the potential of an extension until September 15th for students to accept or decline.
Offer Extension Policies Specific to Education Interview Days
